Returning faculty affirms University track in finding technological solutions to industry needs
Written by Maria Consuelo R. del Castillo    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 17:25   PDFPrintE-mail

The remarkable impressions of a University faculty who has just come home from an international technological training should now be impinging on industries still seeking for technological solutions for their industry needs.

After a six- week training in Nanyang Polytechnic University in Singapore, Engr. Erich P. Abad of Mindanao University of Science and Technology recalls of his amazing experience when he was able to affirm on the directions that MUST is doing towards fulfilling industry needs. He found out how much similar, although done in a much larger scale, do international universities such as Nanyang fabricate technological innovations for industries in their countries.

Dubbed the "Technical and Technology Training," it had its focus on the theories and applications of Industrial Electronics, in three modules, namely: Microprocessor, Motion Control and Programmable Logic Controller. One of its highlights was on Embedded Systems, otherwise Robotics.

Engr. Abad teaches at the College of Industrial and Information Technology in MUST. He expects that the knowledge and skills he gained from the international training will benefit the entire MUST community, most particularly on the integration of the culture and practices in the BSECT curriculum of the College of Industrial and Information Technology, and other allied courses.

The training, which reeled from March 15 to April 24, 2010 was sponsored by Temasek Foundation-NYPi-Philippines, in partnership with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

BITAN-AG Creek Clean Up During the Earth Hour 2010 Celebration
Written by Dr. Victoria O. Sumanpan    Wednesday, 07 April 2010 19:56   PDFPrintE-mail

The Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST), through its President, Dr. Ricardo E. Rotoras, has once again showed its support to the global celebration of the Earth Hour held on March 27, 2010, to raise awareness on energy consumption and take action against climate change.earth-hour-2010-celebration

Dr, Victoria Sumanpan, the MUST Director for Extension actively led the university's participation to the Earth Hour celebration. The campaign involved varied activities. Promotional tarpaulins on the event were displayed by the University gate and the Administration Building. Students, faculty and personnel signed and expressed their commitment to the Earth Hour advocacy on the two freedom boards placed at the Gym Lobby and by the University Entrance. At dawn of March 27, Extension personnel and college coordinators, together with selected students/officers from the four colleges, proceeded to nearby Barangay 26 for a Bitan-ag Creek clean up.

During the actual switch off lights (which was done simultaneously with the rest of the world as the highlight of the global bitan-ag-creekcelebration), in the evening of the same day, at 8:30-9:30 P.M., MUST officials and students joined representatives from other schools and organizations in a jovial countdown at the SM Pueblo Township. Dressed in Earth Hour t-shirts, MUST participants cheerfully immersed into an hour of darkness to promote electricity conservation and care for our planet. Originally, the Earth Hour celebration started in Sydney, Australia in early 2007 to fight against global warming. From just a simple plan of urging residents to switch off all lights and electrical appliances for just an hour, it impressively became a global celebration. In Cagayan de Oro City, the Department of Energy initiated the Earth Hour in support to the advocacy of the World Wildlife Fund-Australia and the Green Army.
