The Mindanao University of Science and Technology (formerly Mindanao Polytechnic State College), the only state university in Cagayan de Oro, celebrated its first anniversary as a university last February 3-5 2010. The event's theme was based on the university's core values: Moral uprightness, Unselfish dedication, Social responsibility, and Total quality management.
Dr. Ricardo E. Rotoras, in his welcome remarks during the opening ceremonies, talked about the directions that the MUST will pursue in the next five years. He said that as a state university, the MUST is called to fill the market gap in terms of providing the required human capital for development. He also said that, in order to ensure attainment of its vision to be among the country's leading providers of scientific and technological knowledge and skills, the MUST has to succeed in its current endeavors.

Dr. Consorcio S. Namoco, Jr., head of the Center for Research in Technology, Engr. Ruvel J. Cuasito, Sr., chairman of the Electromechanical Technology (EMT) department, Engr. Camilo S. Salvaña III, faculty member of EMT department and Mr. Micah Paul M. Olgina, part-time lecturer of EMT department, were awarded DOST grants to attend and present papers during the 13th International Conference on Mechatronics Technology (ICMT) 2009 held on October 20-23, 2009 at Waterfront Hotel and Casino, Lahug, Cebu City. Dr. Namoco presented a paper entitled, "Workers Empowerment Through Skills Competency Enhancement: An Academe Initiative Towards Competitiveness and Productivity in Industrial Automation"(co-authored by Engr. Cuasito); Engr. Salvaña, on his paper, "Preliminary Study on the Development of a Low-Cost Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Milling Trainer" (co-authored Mr. Olgina, Engr. Cuasito & Dr. Namoco); and Engr. Cuasito, also on his paper, "Innovations in Industrial Technology Education: Responding to the Industrial Automation Needs and Practices in the Industry" (co-authored by Dr. Namoco).

Twenty college students and six alumni of Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST), who comprised the LIKHA Dance Ensemble, bagged top award during the 5th International Nature Loving Association, Inc. (INLA) Song and Dance Festival held on August 11-12, 2009 in Beijing, Peoples' Republic of China.

The Civil Service Commission (CSC) declared MUST in September as one of the awardees in the implementation of the ARTA in the educational institution category. MUST is the first university to have mandated a Citizen's Charter in compliance with the Anti-Red Tape Act (ARTA).
